P2 C- Video Game Genres
Action/Adventure- Action-adventure
games combine elements of the two genres and often feature long-term obstacles
that must be completed by using pre-gathered items, including many smaller
obstacles and objectives along the way, requiring action-game activities to
overcome (i.e. fighting, magic etc.). The first action-adventure game came in
the form of Atari 2600’s Adventure
(1979), inspired by text game Colossal
Cave Adventure. A notable example of this genre is The Legend of Zelda, a
very famous game franchise by Nintendo. One of the most recent examples of this
is Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, released May 10, 2016.
Driving/Racing/ Vehicle Simulation-
Racing Games typically place the player in the driver’s seat of a high
performance vehicle and require the player to race against fellow drivers or in
“Time Trials”. These games first emerged in the late 1970’s and are still very
popular today. Organised racing simulators are designed to reproduce the
experience of driving a racing car/motorbike in Indycar/NASCAR/Formula 1 etc.
whereas imaginary racing games (like Mariokart) involve madcap environments,
settings, cars and speeds. One notable example of racing games is the Mario
Kart series produced by Nintendo. A recent example is F1 2016, released 19th
August 2016.
First Person Shooter- In First-person
shooter games, ranged weapons are wielded by the player and can be seen from
the protagonist’s point of view, with a HUD (Heads-up Display) displaying
Health and other such information. The First-Person Shooter often involves
violent gameplay with lethal weaponry. A notable example of first person
shooters is the Battlefield franchise published by EA Games. The most recent
example of a First-Person Shooter is Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, released 4th
November 2016
RPG- Role-playing Video Games (RPGs)
draw their gameplay from traditional role playing games like dungeons and
dragons. Most of these games feature the player taking the role of an
adventurer who specialize in specific skill sets such as melee, combat or
casting magic spells. The most notable example of this genre is the final
fantasy series developed by Square Enix. The most recent example of this genre
is Fallout 4, released November 10th 2015
